East Coast Tasmania is many different things. Yes, it’s picture-perfect, white sand beaches and open, endless blue horizons. It’s places that make you feel like you’re the first person to leave a footprint. It’s national parks filled with wonders, and seaside towns filled with welcome. It’s a gourmet food bowl bursting with the best local fare. But it’s much more than that.
Tasmania’s east coast is a place of stories, encounters and treasures. A place where small, unexpected moments become lifelong memories and where taking a break can not only refresh, but reinvent.
Five national parks spread along the coast including the stunning Freycinet National Park with its pink granite mountains, white beaches and crystal clear sea.
The two largest towns on the East Coast are Bicheno and St Helens - both busy fishing ports, so expect some of the freshest seafood around. There's also some of the best game fishing in Australia.
Inland from the coast you'll find temperate rainforests, fresh grown produce and the rich heritage of the boom days of tin mining as well as fruits and berries from orchards and gardens and full-flavoured beef and lamb raised on seaside pastures.
A must try is Get Shucked Oysters. A unique brand promoting the nutritional and health benefits of Tasmania's pure product and the pleasurable experience derived by eating oysters. Catch the ferry to Bruny Island from Kettering, 40min south of Hobart. Ferry runs 7 days a week. Oysters taste best plucked straight from the waters and eaten onsite at Get Shucked- it doesn't get any fresher.
As Australia's only island state, access to Tasmania is by air and sea only.
Regular flights depart from Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane and fly direct to Hobart and Launceston. Direct flights are also available from Melbourne to Wynyard (Burnie), Devonport, King and Flinders Island. Alternatively many visitors travel to Tasmania from Melbourne by sea on the Spirit of Tasmania. Departing from Melbourne and arriving in Devonport, this has the added benefit of letting you bring your own car and make the most of Tasmania's touring potential.
